Rapallo 17/07/2010

Today was our longest drive yet and we got off to a slow start as Adri and I had trouble sorting out access to our finances. After we got round the logistics of internet access, accounts and passwords we were on our way though. Leaving Venice behind us we had a 4hr drive over to the West side of Italy now. To the Ligurian coast. We were headed for a hotel at the sea side town of Rapallo where we would be based for the next two days. From Rapallo we would be able to catch a train down to the world heritage region of Cinque Terre the next day.

Rapallo was a gorgeous town and a bit of a surprise really. Part of Liguria, this area is the Italian equivalent of the French Riviera. In fact it is known as the Riviera Levante - a place where all the Italians go for their summer vacation! Another nice hotel as well! We have done well with the accommodation up to this point which was all booked online from Australia using Bookings.com and google maps. Rapallo was a lovely seaside port. We had a nice relaxing walk along its esplanade found some good Ligurian seafood at a restaurant and admired the little castle there. Historically known for the place where two post World War 1 treaties were signed and for being a haven for writers such as DH Lawrence, it remains a little tourism vacation centre. The night was finished by the best gelati yet! All natural and fresh ingredients and my pistacchio was on the money. I always judge the gelati on how well they can do pistacchio!
